Responsibilities of Individual Board Members

General Expectations

  • Know NYEC's mission, purpose, goals, policies, programs, services, strengths and needs
  • Actively inform others about NYEC and advocate for NYEC and its work
  • Serve on at least one NYEC committee or working group
  • Follow trends across NYEC's three fields of practice (youth development, workforce development, and education)
  • Understand and follow all organizational policies
  • Remit organizational dues to NYEC each year
  • Be familiar with the organization and communicate with staff as suggested by the Executive Director, or as part of your efforts as a committee or working group chair


  • Attend board (and your chosen committee/working group) meetings and functions
  • Review agenda and supporting materials prior to meetings
  • Support the majority decision on issues decided by the board

Conflicts of Interest

  • Follow NYEC's conflict of interest policy 
  • Serve the best interests of NYEC as a whole rather than that of any other organization, special interest group or constituency
  • Avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest and disclose any possible conflicts to the board in a timely fashion
  • Maintain independence and objectivity and do what a sense of fairness, ethics, and personal integrity dictate

Fiduciary Responsibilities

  • Read and understand the organization's financial statements and otherwise help the board fulfill its fiduciary responsibility
